Billions of Butts (BOB)

What is your idea and how will it increase Millennial civic engagement in your community?:

Cigarette butts are ugly, bad for the environment, and expensive to clean up. This project makes it cool, easy, and cheap for young (and old) people to clean up tobacco litter and educate our smoker-friends on proper disposal. These little butts are the number one cause of litter in the world and they do a lot of damage. The 7000 chemicals seep into the earth and water, harming the soil and aquatic wildlife. Animals end up ingesting these chemicals; either through eating plants that have taken in chemicals through their roots or by eating the butts themselves as they are easily mistaken for food.

Public agencies in North Carolina are already spending millions of dollars annually on litter cleanup. We plan to host massive cigarette butt cleanup "competitions" in popular cities including Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh-Durham, and more. These cleanups will increase millennial engagement while encouraging change in smoker behavior.

How would your idea be implemented?:

Through partnerships with local, state and national organizations, we will organize multi-city cleanup competitions. A team of experienced young people will research and reach out to local youth groups, the media, and key individuals in the weeks leading up to these cleanups. A large portion of the outreach will happen online, using sites such as Twitter and Facebook. We will provide official BOB cigarette cleanup bags for the participants, so we can easily track how many cigarette butts are cleaned. Each bag holds approximately 2000 cigarette butts. Each cleanup's results will be shared with local officials and key community leaders.

Where does your project take place?:

Across State of North Carolina
